Excalibur Leadership Award
Naming History
We all know the mythology around the sword in the stone known as Excalibur. The sword’s rightful owner was to be of the greatest kind of leader. A true leader of and for the people. A selfless, courageous, and humble leader. Brute strength and ambition were never powerful enough to release the sword even for the strongest in the kingdom. Rather it was the qualities of the servant-leader that humbly released the sword. We all know that boy’s name in the story was Arthur – later to be known as King Arthur. The origins of the name Arthur can be traced back to the Celtic name Artos meaning “Bear”. For this reason, we recognize one Baylor Bear, student veteran, who exemplifies this commitment to profound and humble leadership in a way deserving of the name Excalibur.
Award Significance
Baylor University aims to empower leaders who will be go positively lead out on positive global good. As student veterans, these students have completed one chapter of profound leadership while in the military. Even in just their first enlistment in the military they often are called to positions of responsibility for hundreds of thousands of dollars (or more) in equipment, at a minimum, and sometimes even shoulder the weight of being responsible for human lives - having to make profound decisions on a daily basis. At Baylor University, we call our student veterans to continue to hone their leadership skills as they prepare for their next chapters as leaders in the world. This award recognizes a student veteran who embodies, in a profound way, this calling.
