Dr. Janet Bagby Military Dependent of the Year Award
Award Significance
Military dependents are parents, spouses, or children of loved ones that are serving in the military. Their service is unique as they never don a uniform, but instead must fill the gaps that their loved ones leave when fulfilling their military obligations. When those loved ones return home to reunite, that transition back, while filled with joy, can also be another challenging period of adjustment. However, the lingering thought for anyone with a loved one serving overseas is the reality that they may not return. And for those that never do, the loved ones are left with that unfillable void. It is likely for the above reasons, and that deep connection to military service of our dependents, that often make them our most passionate supporters. This is evidenced profoundly by the very founding of our VETS Program. Started by an Army wife and a Marine Corps mother, Dr. Janet Bagby, who, while serving as a professor here at Baylor, had the vision to see our veterans and recognize a gap in services that needed to be filled and thus started the VETS Program that so many Baylor Veterans have been blessed by. For this reason we name this award after Dr. Janet Bagby and her embodiment of our military dependents who dedicate themselves to servant leadership so profoundly.
