Veteran Rights, Policies & Campus Benefits
These are rights, not favors, and none of them apply automatically. Every one requires you to speak up and produce a document. Faculty and staff are generally glad to help, but most of them will not know a policy exists until you tell them.
ⓘ VETS explains and routes. The authoritative office decides. Baylor VETS can walk you through any of these, but the office named under "Who owns this decision" is the one that actually approves it. Start there for anything time-sensitive.
Academic Rights & Policies
Priority Registration
- Who may qualify: every student veteran, every semester.
- What it provides: registration first within your academic classification (first among freshmen, first among sophomores, and so on), because veterans juggle VA medical appointments, VR&E requirements, and family obligations most students don't.
- What you need to do: it only helps if you use it. Be ready the moment your registration window opens, with a course list and backups already built.
- Who owns this decision: Baylor VETS.
Military & Service-Related Absences
- Who may qualify: Guard and Reserve members, and anyone with recurring VA medical appointments.
- What it provides: absences for drill, military orders, and service-related medical appointments are excused without grade penalty, and you must be allowed to make up missed exams and assignments.
- What you need to do: communication is on you. Tell each instructor as early as possible, in writing, and keep a copy of your orders or appointment notice. Give notice at the start of the term if you already know your drill schedule.
- Who owns this decision: each individual instructor, per Baylor's veteran/reserve policy.
Called to Active Duty Mid-Semester
- Who may qualify: Guard and Reserve members who receive long-term orders.
- What it provides: three options if you withdraw because you're called to active duty: a refund of tuition and fees for the term; full credit of that tuition and those fees toward a future term; or, if the orders come late enough in the semester, an incomplete so you can finish the coursework later with no refund or credit.
- What you need to do: tell Kevin and the VA Education Benefits Office as soon as you have orders. Which option is best for you depends on timing and on your benefit.
- Who owns this decision: Baylor VETS and the VA Education Benefits Office, jointly.
Military Credit, Realistically
- Who may qualify: anyone assuming their Joint Service Transcript (JST) will knock out a year of coursework.
- What it provides: Baylor generally accepts JST recommendations only toward Lifetime Fitness, not toward academic coursework. Defense Language Institute credit is a rare exception worth asking about directly.
- What you need to do: manage your own expectations before building a four-year plan around credit that isn't coming. Prior college coursework is a separate question and goes through standard transfer evaluation.
- Who owns this decision: Baylor VETS, for JST; the Registrar's Office, for prior college transfer credit.
Campus Benefits
Service-Connected Veteran Parking
- Who may qualify: anyone with any service-connected rating, however low. Not limited to high ratings, and plenty of eligible students never ask.
- What it provides: a free parking pass.
- What you need to do: bring your VA disability paperwork to the Speight Plaza Parking Office. Renew when your parking registration renews.
- Who owns this decision: Speight Plaza Parking Office.

Lifetime Fitness Exemption
- Who may qualify: veterans who'd rather spend those hours elsewhere. Entirely your call.
- What it provides: one semester exempted from Lifetime Fitness activity for every 135 days of active duty. Separately, the requirement may be waived entirely for anyone over 25 at the time they matriculate.
- What you need to do: submit a copy of your DD-214 to the Lifetime Fitness Program Director. Worth knowing before you register, and worth ignoring on purpose if you'd rather take bowling, kayaking, or rock climbing for an easy hour and a weekly break. Some veterans use the exemption; some deliberately don't. Both are right answers.
- Who owns this decision: Lifetime Fitness Program Director.
