Collin Covington is a senior Management Information Systems major form Houston, Texas, with plans to pursue a career in cybersecurity by way of the tech industry; additionally, Collin serves as the Baylor VETS Program Student President. Collin is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps veteran who served for 5 years while obtaining the rank of Sergeant, and he received the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medal in his service. When asked what led him to serve, Collin said that he was in search of a purpose with the opportunity to be a part of something bigger than himself, and the Marine Corps provided that opportunity while sharing in his passion for our country’s values. This, he says, was, “The best decision I’ve ever made.”
Collins favorite part about Baylor University is the community, including the faculty and staff who consistently dedicate their time to help their students succeed. This sense of belonging and community extends to the VETS Program as well, where Collin cites the community as his favorite element of the program. As a student veteran, some days you can feel alone and isolated while on campus; however, the VETS Program does an incredible job of eliminating this by creating a feeling of family among the veteran students on campus. When asked how the VETS Program has helped him during his time here at Baylor, Collin stated, “This program, and the Veterans of Baylor student organization, has kept me accountable and given me the push I needed coming back into academia.”
With prospective veterans who are considering attending Baylor University in mind, Collin wants them to know that they will not be alone when attending this university, and that they will immediately be absorbed into a family that wants nothing but the best for each other. The VETS Program, and Baylor University as a whole, is focused on establishing a community in which no individual feels alone, and it is one of the many things that makes this place one of the best in the country.
